Visiting a Hindu temple is a sacred experience. Whether you're a lifelong devotee or a first-time visitor, understanding proper temple etiquette ensures a respectful and spiritually fulfilling darshan. This guide covers everything from dress code to darshan protocol.
👗 Dress Code
Wear clean, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees
Traditional attire preferred: saree, dhoti, kurta-pyjama, salwar kameez
Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, and revealing clothing
Some South Indian temples require men to remove shirts and wear dhoti/veshti
Always remove footwear before entering the temple premises
🙏 Darshan Protocol
Remove shoes at the designated area outside
Wash hands and feet if water facilities are available
Ring the temple bell upon entering — awakens consciousness
Offer prayers silently or chant mantras at the sanctum
Perform pradakshina (clockwise circumambulation)
Receive prasad with right hand or both hands cupped
Apply tilak/vibhuti offered by the priest
Sit quietly for meditation if space permits
📿 Offering Guidelines
Bring flowers, fruits, coconut, incense, or sweets as offerings
Use a puja thali to carry offerings respectfully
Monetary offerings (dakshina) may be placed in the hundi or given to the priest
For specific deities, bring appropriate items — e.g., bel patra for Shiva, tulsi for Vishnu
