Mahashivratri ("The Great Night of Shiva") is the most sacred festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalguna. It is believed that on this night, Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction (Tandava), and married Goddess Parvati.
